How to Ignite Commitment and Keep Talent in the New Age of Work

Spencer C. Johnson Health Policy Lecture

Thursday, June 27 • 8:45 – 9:30 a.m.

Finding, keeping, and motivating employees is harder than ever. Amid record-setting turnover and staffing shortages across industries, competition for candidates is fierce. There is a massive recalibration taking place around how work fits into peoples’ lives. Winning the new war for talent requires a more humane employee experience, one that meets the needs and values of a changed workforce. Get this wrong, and the future of your organization is in jeopardy. Get this right, and you create an astounding competitive advantage around hiring and retention, while reaping all the benefits and business results that dedicated employees generate. Joe Mull, MEd, CSP, author, Employality: How to Ignite Commitment and Keep Top Talent in the New Age of Work, will outline:

  • An evidence-based framework for creating an employee experience.
  • Factors that lead people to perform better and stay longer.
  • Various forms of burnout and how to combat the root causes of burnout.

Building Stronger Public Health System

Panel Discussion

Thursday, June 27 • 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.

Public health is not an ideological debate; it needs to be a practical conversation. We must call out misinformation, be present in the lives of our community members and rebuild trust. We need to train workers to lead and find ways to pay for public health services and infrastructure at the state and local levels. Brian Castrucci, DrPH, MA, president and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, will explain how to reframe public health assumptions and the panel will discuss:

  • How to transform public perception.
  • Their experiences in health improvement collaboration.

Panel discussion moderated by: Julie Yaroch, DO, president, ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital and incoming chair MHA Board of Trustees; with panelists: Dr. Brian Castrucci, president & CEO, de Beaumont Foundation; Barbara Petee, president, The Root Cause Coalition; and Alexis Travis, PhD, Senior Deputy Director for Public Health Administration, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Deeper Behavioral Health Collaboration Saves Lives

Panel Session

Friday, June 28 • 8:15 – 9 a.m.

Obtaining mental healthcare resembles how some patients feel about their mental illness – falling into hole after hole. Patients struggle with a series of unavailables: access, treatment and coverage. We must champion the shift toward an integrated physical and mental healthcare system. The panel will discuss:

  • The policy and advocacy partners that could result in greater access.
  • More collaborative care models.
  • Raising the ethical commitment to supporting those in need.

Panel discussion moderated by: Laura Appel, executive vice president of government relations and public policy at the Michigan Health & Hospital Association; with panelists: David Coulter, Oakland County Executive; Doree Ann V. Espiritu, MD, medical director, behavioral health services outpatient division, and service chief of psychiatry, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital; Shannon Striebich, president and CEO, Trinity Health Michigan Market and current chair, MHA Board of Trustees.

The Game-Changing Power of Your Rope Team

Closing Session

Friday, June 28 • 9:15 – 10:15 a.m.

As one of the most highly decorated women in the U.S. Army, Gretchen Evans had finally achieved her dream. Overseeing 30,000 troops as a Command Sergeant Major, she was on top of the world. But all of that changed in an instant during a rocket attack in Afghanistan when she suffered catastrophic injuries and became deaf. Evan’s presentation will take you on a journey from her finding her purpose in the military as a young woman, to her devastating injury, to her decision to reclaim her life with the support of her Rope Team consisting of friends, supporters, and service dogs. Evans not only rediscovered the will to live, but she dedicated her life to serving others by founding Team UNBROKEN, a mixed-ability athletic team. Evans will offer her wisdom on the topics of grit, hope, and overcoming any barrier.
